There are two main periods when cemeteries in Ida-Viru County and throughout Estonia are filled with an especially large number of lights.
All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day — 1–2 November
In Estonia, November is traditionally associated with the commemoration of the departed — hingede aeg, or the “time of souls.”
During these days, people visit the graves of relatives, clear away fallen leaves, tidy the burial sites after autumn, and light candles. Their gentle glow in the November darkness symbolises remembrance, gratitude, and respect for past generations.
Christmas Eve and Christmas — 24–26 December
Christmas in Estonia is a family holiday, and for many people, visiting a cemetery is part of the tradition.
On the evening of 24 December, families visit the burial places of their loved ones, light candles, and lay fir branches and winter arrangements. A snow-covered cemetery illuminated by hundreds of warm lights creates a special atmosphere of silence, peace, and loving remembrance.
How to Keep the Flame Burning in Winter Weather
During winter in Ida-Viru County, candles must withstand wind, sleet, and frost. To help a memorial flame burn longer, it is important to choose the right grave lantern.
The most suitable options for a cemetery are:
- enclosed memorial lanterns with lids that protect the flame from wind and precipitation;
- long-burning oil or paraffin refills;
- stable candle holders designed for outdoor use.
Depending on their size and composition, high-quality refills can burn for 24 to 72 hours.
